Modern Mathematics
The Greeks affected us in many ways in the world of math. They used geometry to lay out the cities that they built. They also figured out how to properly space out and plant the seeds in their fields. By doing this, the Greeks improved their crop growth and overall food supply. They had their own set of numbers which were the key to understanding nature. A mathematician named Pythagoras developed a theory which was later called the Pythagorean Theorem. Many of the methods used by the Greeks in math continue to be used throughout our country, and the Pythagorean Theorem has been taught in schools before.

Geography
Ancient Greeks were very advanced in geography compared to other civilizations. Cartographers used stars to make maps of the land. Ptolemy was a Greek scientist, and he wrote a book called Geography. It included about eight thousand places around the world. The Greeks also created the system of longitude and latitude. Geography translated into Greek means writing about the earth. Longitude and latitude is very important in our world today, and every single map printed has lines of longitude and latitude. The Greeks also discovered that the earth was round and not flat like it was shown on maps. The Greek’s discoveries helped scientists understand the earth’s surface.
Modern Understanding of ArchitectureToday, in our 21st century lives, people around the world have immaculate buildings and structures with beautiful designs and patterns. Ancient Greece contributed greatly to the advances of architecture. Three different columns (Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian) were created by the Greeks. Doric columns were the most simple, while the Ionic were somewhat intricate with scrolls at the tops. Corinthian columns were extremely fancy, with a “crown” at the top. Most famous buildings today, like the White House in Washington, D.C., have some sort of column design. Not only did the Greeks invent columns, but they also invented stoas, friezes, and pediments. Stoas were covered lines of columns, and they are commonly known today as porches. Friezes, decorated bands, and pediments, triangular shapes where roof lines come together, are all used in the construction of different buildings and structures. Ancient Greece’s designs and creations are commonly used.
